What is embroidery?

Embroidery is the high-quality stitching of thread into the fabric of a textile using an embroidery machine.

What makes embroidery special?

  1. Premium look: Embroidery has always been one of the finest methods of textile finishing
  2. Very high durability: Embroidery lasts as long as the textile – and even longer
  3. Robustness: Embroidered textiles can be boil-washed
  4. Shading and small details: Fine edges and colour gradients cannot be reproduced in embroidery, as solid yarn colours are used

What are the individual steps in embroidery?

  1. The logo is digitised with embroidery software (embroidery program), tracing every point where the embroidery machine will stitch
  2. The textile is clamped into the embroidery machine
  3. A backing fleece is placed behind the logo to be embroidered. This keeps the textile, which is usually stretchy, stable at the embroidered area and keeps it looking good even after washing.
  4. The embroidery machine with 15 heads starts stitching the design with different threads (each head has a different yarn colour)
  5. After a few minutes, depending on the size and density, the machine is done and the embroidery is complete

What should you keep in mind with embroidery?

  1. Ideally, the design should not have details finer than 1.5 mm line width
  2. Vector graphics are an advantage (if you don’t have a vector graphic, no problem – we vectorise your file free of charge, as long as you have a high-resolution image file, e.g. .jpg, .png, etc.)
  3. A backing fleece can be felt on the inside of the textile
  4. The artwork should not contain delicate, filigree objects
  5. Glossy threads can be used

How much does embroidery cost? From what quantity is it worthwhile?

The price of embroidery is made up of the size of the embroidery (in cm) and the embroidery program. An embroidery program has to be created for every file and usually costs between €30 and €60, depending on the size of the embroidered design. The larger the design, the more stitches the machine has to make and the longer production takes. There is a bulk discount for larger quantities. For every embroidery, an embroidery program is created first, which can be reused for reorders – so you only pay for it with the first order, as long as the embroidery and its size stay the same.

We recommend embroidery from 10 pieces and for smaller designs, as the embroidery program then hardly affects the price.

How do I wash embroidered textiles?

  1. Washable at 90°
  2. Wash inside out
  3. Do not tumble dry more info here

How should my design be prepared for embroidery?

Vector graphics (.eps, .ai, .svg, .pdf) are ideal. The size in cm can always be adjusted. If you are not sure whether your artwork is suitable for embroidery, feel free to write to us at office@hollyshirt.at.

What should you keep in mind after embroidery?

  1. Hoop marks or visible transparent film within the embroidery disappear after the first wash. There may also be tailor’s chalk on the textile for exact positioning, which will also disappear after the first wash.
  2. Only iron the embroidery inside out (on the reverse side).
  3. Do not cut off loose threads on the back of the embroidery, as they guarantee its long-term durability
  4. The embroidery backing on the reverse of the textile is necessary for the stability of the embroidery
